Remember when I said that the only lipstick worth buying is either really cheap or really expensive? Well, I clearly didn’t know how amazing Revlon’s Super Lustrous Lipstick line really is back then. Now that I do, I’m probably not going to buy MAC lipstick for a while.

Until the edgy Colorburst lipstick came out this year, I think most people my age (including myself) didn’t think much of Revlon lippies. After all, it’s the favorite of aunties and middle-aged moms everywhere (God forbid we use the same cosmetics our un-hip elders), and its unappealing packaging and name doesn’t really do much to attract younger customers. Yet the Revlon Super Lustrous lipstick has just the right creaminess, color payoff, and opacity I like in my lipstick and I’m hoping this review might encourage more people to stop being such snobs and give this line a second look. I’m also giving away a tube of my holy grail fuchsia lipstick in my upcoming Bourgeois Beauty Giveaway.
There aren’t any press releases or articles on the Super Lustrous lipstick line, and the only information I could dig up was from the Revlon website. According to the copy, the lipstick is made using the Exclusive LiquiSilkâ„¢ formula, which contains mega-moisturizers that keep the product creamy and long-lasting. There are over 70 shades, though I think only 20 or so are available locally. That kind of sucks because Va Va Violet is the kind of crazy, un-Revlon-like color that would definitely attract the more adventurous makeup enthusiast.

I first discovered this line when I met up with Eman to pick up the Revlon Creme Gloss media samples for review. As a way of thanks, I got to choose any three Revlon products to keep. On a whim I picked up a bright pink lipstick that was peeking out behind a bunch of boring shades, and swatched it on my lips. When I saw how I looked in the mirror, I couldn’t believe my eyes – I had found THE perfect fuchsia lipstick! Not only did it flatter my NC42 skin tone perfectly, but it felt so amazing and lightweight on my lips. The lipstick color is called Love That Pink and I did love this pink so much that I couldn’t wait for Eman to send this to me. I went back and bought it, then bought two more colors later on.

Love that Pink
Love that Pink is a fuchsia lipstick with red undertones. According to a review in Makeup Alley, this particular shade has been around since the 1950s. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was popular among the pin-up girls of the time because the vivid pink shade has this retro feel to it. Love that Pink is not for the color-shy because it makes no apologies for being so damn pink and bright. But if you have been looking for the perfect fuchsia lipstick for dark skin tones or simply want a lip color that makes a real statement, this is it.

Ginger Rose
The Super Lustrous line has yet another one of my holy grail colors – Ginger Rose, the ultimate MLBB (my lips but better) lipstick. This pink-brown shade doesn’t stray far from my natural lip color, which makes it perfect for everyday use. Since it’s more pink than brown, I can also wear it without eye makeup (unlike my former MLBBs from Nyx, whose heavy brown bases makes my face look washed out).

Pink the Afternoon
Pink in the Afternoon is a pinky-coral lipstick and a best-selling shade from the Super Lustrous line. I have to admit that I’m not terribly impressed by this, though. The color is not as pink as I imagine a lipstick called “Pink in the Afternoon” would be, and it doesn’t go on as evenly as the other two lip colors I have. I don’t hate it, but it’s not a shade I would gush about like Love that Pink or Ginger Rose. Still, it’s worth a look if you’re lemming for a nice, natural-looking pink with coral undertones.

DO LIKE:
* Very pigmented and opaque. I like my lipstick pigmented and opaque, whereas semi-sheer lipstick feels like a rip-off. This one completely covers my lips with just one swipe, it seriously feels like it’s worth a thousand bucks.
* Gorgeous finish. I wasn’t a very big fan of the Colorburst lipstick because of the shimmer and semi-sheer finish. On the other hand, the Super Lustrous lip colors I own have a nice satin finish with a subtle gloss, and absolutely no shimmer at all. I think this line has shimmery variants too, but I haven’t tried them yet.
* Creamy and moisturizing. What I don’t like about mid-range lipstick is that they hardly live up to the promises they make. This one, however, delivers the creamy consistency it claims to have without feeling as greasy as Nyx Round Lipstick. Once it’s on your lips, it hardly feels like you’re wearing anything at all. It’s also very moisturizing, although I notice that my lips tend to peel after five or six hours of wear.
* Fairly long-lasting. It’s no budge-proof matte lipstick, but most of the color remains after eating and drinking. This is very important for attention-grabbing shades like Love That Pink. If you don’t eat anything, you probably won’t need to do a retouch because the color stays just as stunning five hours later.
* Price. At just P450 a tube, a lipstick with a formula this amazing is a total steal.
DO NOT LIKE:
* Not all the colors are locally available. Dear Revlon Philippines, please start distributing Va Va Violet.
CONCLUSION:
Revlon’s Super Lustrous formula has everything I want out of lipstick – it’s creamy, pigmented, long lasting, not shimmery, and inexpensive. So if these are your criteria for excellent lipstick, you’re going to love Super Lustrous lipstick as much as I do. Even though the color selection in the Philippines is somewhat limited, you probably won’t have a hard time finding a nice neutral pink, berry, or red for everyday wear. Once I have extra cash to blow, I’ll probably buy a couple more tubes and see if they’re any good.

I’m giving out a tube of Love That Pink in my Bourgeois Beauty Giveaway, which I’ll be announcing in a couple of days. In the meantime, do join my Levi’s I Believe Contest!

SO TRUE. That’s what I thought too at first but when I got my first tube, I don’t really mind using Revlon if it’s that good! I also have Pink in the Afternoon and Ginger Rose, Twinkled Pink, Almost Nude and Goldpearl Plum. My favorite is Almost Nude and Ginger Rose!
Can’t wait for your giveaway! :)
What a great review! I will have to come back and read more. I really like the Pink In the Afternoon.

Is Love That Pink available in the PH? I want it! :D
Of course! I got mine at Watsons in Gateway, haha.
I have Cherries in The Snow. Love it! Really beautiful dark fuschia color :)
Lovely colors, Lauren. Guess I shouldn’t have snubbed these lippies from Revlon. Will check ‘em out :)
i wear revlon Super Lustrous Lipstic in Ginger Rose on my facebook profile picture.
I love the color and it fits on my lips :)
hi lauren, could you please suggest a NYX round lipstick shade that resembles revlon’s love that pink? thank you so much! :)
you could get revlon products for lower prices, you just have to find online sellers on multiply, facebook, and the like. i got my Super Lustrous Lipstick for 190 each! and yes, its US authentic, not like those singapore branded cosmetics. what a steal, right? if NYX cost you 160 then 190 for a revlon lipstick isnt bad right. i got it on a ebay seller. some sellers on facebook sell it for like 300 i guess, but much more cheaper compared to watson’s P575.
if you want the link for cheaper US cosmetics you can email me at
burgundy910@gmail.com
Seriously? Sounds interesting. But what do you mean by “US authentic” and “Singapore-branded cosmetics”? I mean, Revlon is Revlon no matter where you go.
Hi lauren! US authentic are the authentic ones, made in US, the real deal, while singapore-branded cosmetics are made in singapore but the packaging are much the same with the ones from US, they are really cheap, like 160 for a chanel lipstick. i havent tried those singapore ones, because I believe that they are just fakes, cheap replicas of the original ones. just google “singapore branded cosmetics” you can find tons of seller.
about the revlon lipstick i got online, its from an ebay seller, try it here
