After learning that the average sunscreen is laden with all sorts of chemicals, I wasted no time finding organic sunscreen for the summer. I hit the jackpot with the Leyende Place in the Sun Face Sunblock, but what about sunscreen for the body? On a whim I purchased By Nature’s Sunblock Away SPF 55 from The Good Earth and brought it with me to the beach. Unfortunately, I wasn’t too impressed by it.

DO NOT LIKE:
* Oil-based. I was expecting a lotion-type sunscreen and wasn’t prepared to see a runny, oily liquid ooze out of the bottle. Although I knew that the sunscreen contained organic sesame oil, sunflower oil, virgin coconut oil, hazelnut oil, and jojoba oil, I thought that somewhere in there was an ingredient that would make it lotion-y. It has the consistency and feel of massage oil which, under the heat of the sun, wasn’t a very pleasant feeling.
* Scented. The sunscreen has a mild scent, which was another minus for me. I dislike applying scented products on my face because my hyper-sensitive nose starts getting sniffly and sneezy shortly after. Then again, I wouldn’t apply oil onto my face.
* Requires frequent reapplication. According to the product blurb, you need to reapply every two hours if you stay directly under the sun. You will also need to reapply after swimming. I don’t like having to slap on sunscreen this frequently, especially since I like spending hours soaking in the water. I ended up using a Hawaiian Tropics sunscreen for swimming which, by the way, is a pretty horrible sunscreen. It smells great but it’s difficult to spread and it seems to attract moisture and humidity. I get extra sweaty whenever I put it on, ugh.

DO LIKE:
* Easily absorbed by the skin. Fortunately, the icky oily feeling goes away ten minutes after application, and it doesn’t make me sweat as badly as the Hawaiian Tropics one. I think it’s because organic sunscreen uses physical sun protection (titanium dioxide and zinc oxide) whereas normal sunscreen uses chemicals that absorbs UV rays. I still wish it were lotion-based though.
* The price. P350 a bottle is a pretty decent price for organic sunscreen.
CONCLUSION:
Needless to say, the By nature Sunblock Away was pretty disappointing, mostly because of its oil-based nature. Even though the organic ingredients made me feel safe, it doesn’t feel too pleasant on the skin, not to mention that having to reapply constantly is a bit of a hassle. On the bright side, at least I was protected from getting sunburned.
WILL I REPURCHASE?
Not unless there’s a lotion-type version of this one – I’d like to try that out for sure. Until I find organic sunscreen that doesn’t feel greasy on the skin, I think I’ll just stay under the shade or go out at night. Or maybe forgo the body sunscreen altogether. I mean, I lived 24 years without ever really using sunscreen unless I’m at the beach. Maybe this is just one of those things advertising taught us to need.

Hey Lauren! I’ve been using Beach hut sunblock spray (for about 3 years I think)…yeah I know it’s not organic but it’s non-sticky and is absorbed well by the skin. It does have a mild scent though…I used this during the campaign but the bf said umitim din ako. LOL. But it’s really convenient to use. I think we’re both looking for organic sunscreens for the body. If you find something (online or at Healthy options) let me know :)
I still love Skin Hour’s mattifying day cream which you recommended, I’m on my 2nd tub :)
